BidFire Tips and Strategies

I found this great blog post on BidFire's blog. Below is BidFire's suggested tips and strategies.

Tips and Strategies January 13, 2011
At BidFire, we've come up with a long list of tips, meant to help you get familiarized with our site, bidding and developing strategy. Some of these may help you when bidding but keep in mind, they do not provide any guarantees of winning an auction. Remember this is a game of skill and to get the best deals you should know the game inside and out!
Get to Know BidFire
We suggest that you get familiarized with our site by watching a few auctions and noticing how other bidders place there bids. After watching a few of the Auctions in the CampFire View you will start to get the feel of how things work and how people bid.
Watch the competition. Follow certain users and take notes on who they are, when they bid, what they bid on, and how often they win.
Read FAQ’s & Watch the Video Tutorial
Read all the FAQ's and watch the video tutorial.
Review the Closed Auctions Section
Check out auctions that have ended. You can find our Closed Auctions Section on the main page above the Auction Grid. Click on the "Closed" button to review the auctions from the previous few days.
Once you’re in the Closed Auction section you can page through all the closed auctions by clicking on the page number or the next button at the bottom of the grid.
Look for patterns on specific items you're interested in, look at the closing price and who won the auction. This will give you an idea of how many bids you will need to win and who you will go up against.
Timing is everything!
Timing is everything! The time of day, the day of the week, & the time you place your bid.
The time of day is very important for getting the price you want and narrowing down the competition. Check auctions throughout the day and notice how many bidders appear to be competing for each auction. Certain times of the day have less people bidding on auctions then others. Remember if it looks like there are only a few people bidding on an item, there probably is only a few people bidding on the item.
Always be sure to bid before the last 5 seconds of the countdown to ensure that your bid registers!
There are so many auctions, which one should I bid on?
Picking your auction carefully is crucial to your success. If you're new to Competitive Shopping, try starting with smaller auctions before diving into the big ones. These auctions are our lower risk auctions, there are less people bidding on them and therefore they are easier to win with smaller amounts of bids.
Our Featured Auctions are high risk/high reward. They have the most people bidding on them using high amounts of bids, these auctions can be won with just a few bids and this happens all the time, however, this strategy may not be effective. You must go into these auctions preparing to place a significant amount of bids in order to win!
Surprise Auctions can appear anytime throughout the day, a lot of the time these auctions appear out of no where and whoever spots them reaps the benefits. Sometimes we’ll announce the Surprise Auctions through Twitter, and sometimes we won’t so be sure to refresh your screen occasionally if you want to take part in these Surprise Auctions! Here’s a little hint....These auctions usually appear on half hour, 20 minute mark, or 15 minute mark, however they could be at anytime.
Following us on Twitter keeps you ahead of the game by getting last minute Auction Updates and Surprise Auction Notifications!
When should I place my bid?
Place your bids using a certain strategy. Bid first, bid late, or always counteract. Change up your bidding strategy occasionally to keep other users on their toes, remember that they are doing their homework also. Most likely other members of the Firing Squad are keeping track of the way you bid just as you should be watching them.
A common newbie bidding tactic is to wait until the last second to bid. Does this work? Not really. When it's over, it's over, and the auction will not accept any more bids. Respect the clock, bid early and often, or risk losing out on your deal!
Watch the timer and bid no later than the last 5 seconds to make sure your bid has time to register. If the counter seems to be reaching zero pretty often, it can mean that there are few users bidding on that item and this gives you an edge by increasing your chances of winning.
It's always a good rule of thumb to try placing a bid even if you are shown as the current leader. When you are the current leader, the bid will not register, however, if you place a bid and it registers, this could indicate that the timer on your computer is not isync with our servers. Refresh your browser occasionally to make sure that we are all on the same page.
Realize that winning is all about knowing your opponent & knowing when to place your bid.
Watch the clock
Watch the timer at all times. The timer will start at a set countdown, usually 30 seconds. The timer reset is shown in the top left corner in the CampFire View or in the bottom left corner of each auction on the Auction Grid. The clock will reset everytime someone places a bid under the set timer countdown. Watch what time other members place their bid.
Depending on the action, at times we may switch the timer countdown from 30 seconds to 20 or 15 second resets. If we decide to change the timer reset we will announce it over Twitter, which will update the Twitter feed at the top of our site, so be sure to read the Twitter feed!
Don’t Bid too Late and Miss your Chance to Win
Don't bid too late and miss out! You may want to wait until the very last second because you think someone else is going to bid, when all of a sudden you try to place a bid and the timer runs out. To ensure that your bid registers, be sure to push the bid button before the clock dips below 5 seconds.
If you do miss your chance to win, keep your eye open for that product again, it shouldn’t be too long until it goes up for Auction. You can also request what auctions you would like to see by sending an email to wishlist@bidfire.com
Determine how much you are willing to spend on each auction
Don’t go into an auction thinking that you’re going to win with 1 bid every time because most likely you are not.  This does happen all the time however, this is not a good strategy to live by.  Set a realistic amount of bids that you’re willing to place for each auction.
Our Firing Squad (you, the users!) get amazing deals every day. Every item on BidFire sells at rock bottom bargain prices, but it’s better to start on some of the lower priced products and work your way up. Cheaper products tend to have fewer bidders and therefore are more likely to win. Once you get the hang of BidFire and develop your strategy, you're more likely to win the major items.
When you purchase larger BidPacks you will get better deals. If you have a large amount of bids in your account you won’t run out of bids as quickly when you're in auction and miss out on getting the deal you were bidding on.
And don’t forget to keep track of your winnings and your budget. The more information you track the better!
Should I bid on more than one Auction at a time?
This is up to how comfortable you are with our site and competitive shopping in general!
Try to concentrate your bidding on one or a few items. Placing bids randomly is not a good strategy. There are better times to bid, and better days of the week to get better deals.  The number of users online at any time changes from minute to minute, hour to hour and day to day. Use this to your advantage.
Should I bid on BidPacks?
Winning BidPacks is a good way to get a discount on bids! We run BidPacks all day long and you can win them for just a few bids a lot of the time. BidPacks are also good auctions to jump into and get your feet wet. However, watch out because at times these auction turn into turf wars. This is a good arena to show who’s boss.
If you have some helpful tips that you'd like to see added to this list, feel free to contact our Support Team and let them know.

Class Auction Suit Against Quibids

A class action lawsuit has been filed against QuiBids, LLC, by the law firm of Beckham & Mandel in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma alleging deceptive and unfair trade practices and fraud in its operation of QuiBids.com. I really don't think the charges against Quibids will stand. In my opinion, Quibids is the best penny auction site out there. They are also one of the most honest sites. The man that has filed the lawsuit was a customer that spent $50 in bids but did not win any item on Quibids.
For those who do not know much about Quibids, QuiBids.com is an interactive online website which allows its users to buy consumer products at greatly reduced prices by participating in online auctions. QuiBids.com claims that users of their website will pay 80-95% less than retail prices for thousands of consumer products, including high-end items such as HDTVs, laptops, and even automobiles, by bidding on their merchandise via online auctions. However, according to the suit, virtually none of the consumers who participate in these "auctions" will win the right to purchase such high-end item products at those greatly reduced prices.
The suit alleges that the failure to win auctions is costly to QuiBids customers. Each auction draws hundreds or thousands of bids purchased at $.60 per bid. The losing bidders do not get back the cost of the losing bids. Thus, the overwhelming majority of customers will lose money using the QuiBids website, according to the suit.
The suit alleges that QuiBids.com does not tell its customers that they have virtually no chance to come out ahead financially. Thus, while QuiBids.com passes itself off as a legitimate auction house, its business operation is more akin to a casino or a lottery.
As a result of QuiBids.com's alleged fraudulent and deceptive business practices, the suit alleges QuiBids has taken in millions of dollars. In one such auction, alleged in the suit, QuiBids' profits exceeded $12,000 from the bidding on a $1,500 HDTV. The ultimate winner paid $228.59, but 22,859 bids were purchased by all bidders in the total amount of $13,715.40. All of those bidders except one walked away with nothing, never knowing they were playing more of a lottery than bidding in an auction.
While QuiBids.com claims that it offers consumers great savings, "In reality, they are just taking people's money and giving them nothing in return," Roger Mandel, attorney for the Class, said. "If they want to operate their business like a lottery, then they need to tell people the truth about their chances of winning -- which are slim to none," said Mandel.

Indiana Article on TixFrenzy.com

Below is an article on the brand new penny auction site called: TixFrenzy. It just opened in December 2010 and was featured in the Indiana Daily Student. Below is the featured article:

Senior Taylor Wagener and two high school friends opened the doors of their penny-auction website specializing in event tickets, TixFrenzy.com, in December.

It’s now a new form of shopping online — entertainment in which people can gain deals on event tickets and gift cards related to attending such events.

“Unlike eBay, TixFrenzy.com is a penny-auction where the price of every item starts at $0 and increases $0.01 every time a bid is placed. Ten to 30 seconds is added to the auction every time a bid is placed. This is where the entertainment comes in. It’s fun and competitive,” said Wagener, who majors in tourism management.

Wagener teamed up with brothers Richard Lilja, a senior at the University of Illinois Chicago, and Scott Lilja, a fifth-year senior at Northwestern University, to start Lilja-Wagener Enterprises, the mother-company of TixFrenzy.com. The friends went to school together at Lake Forest High School in Illinois.

“It took about two years of research,” Wagener said. “We heard about swoopo.com and got the incredible idea of doing the same thing for event tickets. We looked at other sites to see what worked and what didn’t.”

They hired an external script-writer to make the sophisticated software that TixFrenzy.com uses, but the work is mostly contained among the three friends. Each person has  specific duties pertaining to their majors to ensure the company is functioning.

Scott Lilja, the computer programmer of the group, said he mainly deals with the design.

“I see it as a full-time job for all of us. Maybe in a couple years, we could eventually sell if we had a good bid,” Scott Lilja said.

Richard Lilja, a finance major, said he works primarily with finances and advertising.
In this, there is a method to their auctions and events featured. Though the website primarily features event tickets, they are selling gift cards and flights, too.

“We try to mix in stuff that isn’t geographically limited, stuff anyone can use,” Wagener said.

A list of recently sold items include Rose Bowl tickets for $0.07, Blue Man group concert tickets for $0.04 and Colts tickets for $0.27.

The website currently features Chicago- and Indianapolis-based event tickets for auction, and Wagener said they have plans to expand the auction site to include other destinations in the near future.

New Chill Auctions at BidFire.com

BidFire.com is adding to their exciting list of auctions, Chiller Auctions. Chiller Auctions are only open to users that haven't won a single auction valued over $450. These auctions are great for the penny auction newbies or just those who haven't taken the plunge on high ticket items like laptops, tvs, ipads and more.

I love this new addition to BidFire. I've never seen it done on any other penny auction website. I'm a big fan of the beginner auctions offered on other sites. However, usually a beginner auction only sells a dvd or a $25 gift card. This Chiller Auctions are really cool..no pun intended.

To visit BidFire click HERE

Below is what BidFire posted on the blog regarding Chiller Auctions:

What is a Chiller Auction?
We've created a new type of auction just for our users that don't want to go against the big guys! These auctions will "Freeze" out some of the competition. Anyone who has won a single auction valued over $450 MSRP will not be able to participate in Chiller Auctions.
Chiller Auctions have a Snowflake icon on the bottom right of the auction & are outlined in Blue when looking on the auction grid.

Ten Tips for Winning Penny Auctions

  1. Don't bid on an auction that has several hours left. You will get outbid. Instead, bid when the item has 5 minutes or less. Usually I wait until the auction has less than a minute left.
  2. Don't bid on an auction just because no one else is. Odds are there are 50 other people watching that auction too.
  3. Bid only on auction that offer a "buy it now" option. If you don't win the auction, you don't necessarily loose your money because you can apply your bid dollars to buy the item.
  4. Per #3 above, only bid on items that you actually want to buy. If you are just bidding on the auction because you think it's a good price you are only short changing yourself. Bid on items that you are willing to buy using a "buy it now" option.
  5. Don't confuse penny auction sites with eBay. You are paying for each of your bids, spend them wisely.
  6. The best time to bid is early in the morning when people are getting ready for work. There are still a number of bidders on penny auction sites at 2:00 and 3:00am. Penny auction sites attract night owls, play in the morning instead.
  7. Don't spend more than the product is worth. This is simple but must be said, don't spend $40 in bids on a $35 item.
  8. Earn free bids. Most penny auction sites offer free bids if you refer your friends or write a blog post about their site.
  9. Don't gamble. Don't bid on items just to win. Some consumers bid on items just for the rush of winning after a loss. Avoid this.
  10. The more bids you buy, the more you save. Most sites offer bids at a cheaper rate if you buy in bulk.

Bid Penny's Featured Deal of the Day

I have decided to run a deal of the day each day featuring varying penny auction websites. I will post all "Deal of the Day" posts with a blue background so that they will stand out.

Two Coupon Codes for Freedom Bids

FreedomBids.com launches its site on February 1, 2011. I have two coupon codes for this new penny auction site.

1.) If you pre-register before February 1st you can receive an additional 3 bids with the 5 bids you receive upon registration. Use coupon code vw25gh for 3 free bids!

2.) Get 40 free bids when you buy a bid pack of 500. Use coupon code 45th98ws1

At Freedom Bids each bid costs $0.60 and each bid raises the item's price by $0.02.  With each bid placed, the clock timer increases by 3-30 seconds depending on the auction type. Visit www.freedombids.com for more information.
